Meet Kellyanne
Hi, it’s nice to meet you. I’m a bilingual (English and Auslan) deaf woman, a mum to two deaf kids, a primary teacher, qualified Teacher Of the Deaf, avid reader and maker of children’s clothes.
Growing up as an oral deaf person with hearing aids in regional Victoria, I know how isolating it can be to grow up as one of the few deaf people you know. I discovered Auslan in my teens and am now proudly bilingual. I value the freedom and flexibility that bilingual communication offers and want to share this with you. In my 30s, I decided to get cochlear implants which has had a big and positive impact on my life.
As a child, I was fortunate that there was a local support group for families with deaf children and this introduced me to many deaf people, including some who have positively impacted my life and become firm friends.
With years of personal and professional experience, I’m dedicated to helping families navigate the journey of raising a deaf child. This involves sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and the strategies that have worked for my own children. Seeing the joy on children’s faces as they expand their communication abilities is incredibly rewarding, and I believe that every deaf child deserves access to all communication options to help them flourish.
Now, I’m here to support you and your family, offering guidance and sharing strategies that have worked for my own family and those I’ve worked with. As a parent, I’ve brought up my children to be confident, thriving, bilingual, deaf individuals and I want to see your child flourish in the same way. Working with children and seeing them expand their communication abilities is incredibly rewarding.
There’s no single way to be a deaf person, so why not give your deaf child all the tools they need to become a great communicator?
Language is not an ear thing or
a mouth thing. It’s a brain thing.
Meet Growing Communicators
Welcome to Growing Communicators! I’m thrilled to offer my support to you and your family. My journey to creating this business is deeply personal and rooted in my own experiences as a deaf individual and parent of two deaf children.
Facing limited support options for bilingual English/Auslan pathways in Canberra, I founded Growing Communicators to help families navigate these challenges. My goal is to provide comprehensive support, guidance and teaching tailored to your needs.
With experience in various deaf educational settings and a deep understanding of the barriers faced by deaf individuals and their families, I am uniquely positioned to support your family. I offer impartial and balanced support, while working closely with your family to create a deaf-friendly environment for your child.
My experiences in both the hearing and deaf worlds have profoundly shaped my approach to supporting families. My goal is to ensure effective communication, regardless of the languages, modes or devices used. My approach adapts to both speech and Auslan, embracing the flexibility of bilingual and bimodal communication. I want to help you embrace that both languages and communication modes are possible for your child. It’s not a choice of either/or.
Our sessions are based on my Support – Connect – Communicate approach:
- SUPPORT: I partner with you to navigate the challenges of raising a deaf child, offering my lived experience and providing support for your child, you, and your family.
- CONNECT: Building strong connections with your child and creating a supportive community is essential.
I help you make these connections, so you never feel isolated in your journey. - COMMUNICATE: Whether you choose speech or sign language, I’ll help you learn how to communicate effectively with your child, catering to their individual strengths.
I believe in your expertise as a parent and knowledge of your child and am here to support your choices.
Let’s work together to empower your child and enhance your family’s communication skills.
